Photo GalleryHIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point University hosted the annual Panther Club Golf Tournament presented by BB&T on Wednesday, May 13 at the Willow Creek Golf course.
The event featured 33 foursomes and raised money for the Panther Club's Student-Athlete's Excellence Fund, which goes towards facility upgrades and athletic scholarships.
"All the proceeds from today's event go to benefit the Student-Athlete's Excellence Fund," assistant athletic director for development Bryan Norris said. "That fund helps all of our student-athletes become champions in competition, in the classroom and in the community. The fund is used to provide athletic scholarships, facility improvements and to enhance the student-athlete experience by providing conference championship rings and senior class rings."
Nick Shumaker, a former HPU baseball player from 2008-12, reaped the benefits of the Panther Club's golf outing and is now giving back for this year's student-athletes.
"This golf tournament has been important for many years," Shumaker said. "I know that my team's success and my success at HPU was helped by the boosters and the support the community gave. So coming out here to reach out to the community to form a strong bond is very important. It helps raise money, but it also helps create more support in the fan base for the athletes."
The event also featured a raffle drawing as well as prizes for closest to the hole and longest drive.
"Every year we are excited to come out here and put on a fun event for everyone," Robin White said. "But at the end of the day, it's most important because all the proceeds go to our Student-Athlete Excellence Fund."
