Photo GalleryHigh Point University student-athletes and staff members participated in Community Read Day at nearby Montlieu Elementary Academy of Technology on Tuesday. It's just one of the many community service events that HPU athletics is participating in this year.
"Throughout the year, our student-athletes participate in community service in local schools, whether it's read days, field days, or anything else," said HPU Assistant Athletic Director
April Wines. "It's a great opportunity for our student-athletes to be role models for these young students."
As part of Community Read Day, HPU student-athletes and staff members were each assigned a classroom where they read books to the local students.
"It was great to come in to the school and serve the community," said HPU men's soccer player Joe Tingey. "They had a lot of questions about the college life and I was happy to help them understand that. I had a great time."
Lindsey Green, Montlieu Academy of Technology's Literacy Curriculum Facilitator/Lead Mentor, said the school is always looking for different groups to come and read to the students, and many different teams, fraternities, sororities and other groups are regulars at these events.
"This month we wanted to have athletes at our Community Read Day," said Green. "Our students always say they want to be athletes so we want them to understand that it's truly a balance of academics as well as the sport. We thought that bringing in athletes and staff from HPU would really help our students see that."
