High Point University hosted the Panther Club Golf Tournament presented by BB&T on Thursday at Willow Creek Golf Course. The event is one of the Panther Club's major fundraisers, this year bringing in over $18,000 to benefit HPU's student-athletes primarily through scholarships and facility improvements.
The Murray M. White Insurance team of Murray White, Rick Riddle, Kim Russel and Carson Hurley won the scramble with a score of 52 on the par-72 course.
The BB&T team of Thomas Barrier, Mason Schermerhor, Bill Schermerhor and Barry Sikes finished second with a score of 54 and the Richard Childress Racing team of Richard Payne, Austin Craven, Eric Drinith and Bryan Roberson placed third with a score of 56.
There were other contests on the course, including closest to the hole and longest drive.
The event also featured raffles, a silent auction and a dinner at the course. All money raised during the event was for the High Point University Athletics Scholarship Fund and will directly benefit High Point's student-athletes. The fund was established by the Panther Club in 2001.
The Panther Club's next major event is the 12th annual Panther Club Dinner & Auction, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Millis Center on the High Point University campus. The event features a reverse raffle with a chance to win $10,000 as well as a silent auction, dinner, dancing and music. More information is available on the Panther Club Dinner & Auction web page.
