The High Point University women's golf team shot a season-best round of 300 on Monday at the Kiawah Island Classic to move into a tie for 27th out of 33 teams with a two-day score of 631. Sophomore
Angela Gimenez carded a career-low 70, two-under par, to lead HPU.
HPU's combined score of 300 is six-strokes better than the Panthers' previous season-best round of 306 which was achieved at the Terrier Intercollegiate on Sept. 12. It is High Point's best round since shooting a combined 299 at the Big South Championship in 2005.
“After yesterday's round we had a long talk about over thinking on the golf course,” said head coach
Vici Pate Flesher. “Today the entire team showed a lot of maturity and didn't over think the easy shots. The results were clear. We scored one of the best rounds in team history and Angela scored one of the best individual rounds. It was a breakthrough and just the beginning of good things for this young team. Angela had a lot of fire on the golf course today. She played some brilliant shots today and never gave up.”
Gimenez knocked in four birdies including two on the front nine where she shot a two-under 34. She is currently tied for 20th with a 36-hole score of 150 (80-70). The 18-hole score is one-stroke shy of HPU's record low of 69 which was shot by AnnMarie Dalton at the UNCG-Starmount Fall Classic in 2007.
