The High Point University men's lacrosse team had its first-ever individual workout session on Tuesday morning on HPU's upper practice fields. Head coach Jon Torpey directed defensive drills in the first session.

"It was great to finally get outside and be doing lacrosse-related work with our team," said Torpey. "We've been getting to know these guys through the recruiting process and doing a lot of work to build up the program. Today we got to see some of the fruits of our labors, which was really fun."

"Today was really basic, fundamental training," said Torpey. "We sacrificed speed for form and began to show our team what we expect of them. The guys were very coachable and, so far, we've been impressed with their conditioning, work ethic and character. Coach [Pat] Tracy and I feel like we've got a great foundation to build the program upon."

This week, the team is allowed to do eight total hours of individual workouts and will also do strength & conditioning and community service. After working on defense in the first session on Tuesday, assistant coach Pat Tracy will direct offensive drills on Wednesday.

The High Point University men's lacrosse team will be able to start a full, 20-hour per week practice schedule next week. The team will also lift weights and work on speed and agility five days a week and continue to do community service throughout the fall.

Torpey and Tracy brought in 20 players for the 2011-12 season, which will be preparation for HPU's inaugural varsity season of 2012-13. The Panthers will play some exhibition games this year which will be announced later.
