High Point University hosted the Panther Club Golf Tournament presented by BB&T on Thursday at Willow Creek Golf Course. The event is a significant fundraiser that will benefit HPU's student-athletes primarily through scholarships and facility improvements. The Richard Childress Racing team won the tournament.
The RCR team of Richard Payne, Nick Terry, Austin Craven and Eric Drinth posted a low score of 52 for the scramble. Richard Childress Racing features Austin Dillon in his second full season in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and Ty Dillon his first full season of ARCA competition. Austin recently completed his sophomore year at HPU and Ty will be a freshman this fall.
Close behind RCR in the team standings were the International Home Furnishings Center team of Julie Messner, Tom Mitchell, Tom Loney and Todd Messner and the Aramark team of Jay Faircloth, Jason Forrest, Mike Tuttle and
Matt Schooler. IHFC shot 55 and Aramark shot 56.
In the individual competitions, Craig Keilitz, David Smith, Schooler and Drinth were closest-to-the-hole winners and Red Messner had the longest drive.
The event also featured raffles and a dinner at the course. All money raised during the event was for the High Point University Athletics Scholarship Fund and will directly benefit High Point's student-athletes. The fund was established by the Panther Club in 2001.
The Panther Club's next major event is the 11th annual Panther Club Dinner & Auction, which will be held Sept. 17 at the Millis Center on the High Point Unviersity campus. The event features a reverse raffle with a chance to win $10,000 as well as a silent auction, dinner, dancing and music.
