High Point University graduate Akeem Scott was named to the Jamaican National Team and recently played in Centrobasket, a FIBA tournament featuring teams from Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Scott played basketball for the Panthers from 2004-06 and ranks third on HPU's all-time steals list.
Scott played in four games for Jamaica from July 6-10, helping the team to a 2-2 record. He scored 18 points in a loss to the British Virgin Islands and scored 15 in a win over the U.S. Virgin Islands. Jamaica was eliminated with a 55-51 loss to Panama, which advanced to the semifinals.
Last winter, Scott played professional basketball in Europe, including 18 games for Lappeenranta in the Finnish Basketball League. He averaged 16.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.3 steals. It's the same league HPU alum Arizona Reid played in.
Scott led Honka Espoo to the Finnish Basketball League title and was named tournament MVP in 2007-08. He scored the winning basket with 3.3 seconds left in a 72-71 win over Kouvot in the championship game. He played for Honka Espoo again in 2008-09, averaging 16.9 points in 49 games.
In two seasons at High Point University, Scott averaged 10.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.9 steals. His senior year of 2005-06 was his best, as he averaged 14.1 points and 3.7 rebounds while grabbing 64 total assists, which ranks third all-time for HPU. The team went 16-13 overall and 8-8 in conference play, advancing to the Big South semifinals.
Scott transferred to HPU from Garrett Junior College, where he earned All-American honors in 2003-04. He played prep basketball for Gar-Field High School in Woodbridge, Va.
